Robyn and I bravely decided to start a new tradition. I have no idea where it came from, but every year my family unwinds a giant yarn ball filled with random little gifts. It started with my Uncle Jack, Aunt Deon and their 5 kids when they would come spend Christmas/New Year's with my parents (after Jonathan and I were married) and we participated in a couple of "unwindings" before we moved away from Utah. My mom made one for us a couple of years ago when we spend Thanksgiving in Maryland with Bill's family (my other siblings did it on New Year's, like usual). Robyn and I had talked last year about doing it for this year, but almost chickened out. It seemed like a lot of work. But we went for it (Robyn had a great stash of little gifts and a ton of yarn) and it was not a big deal. It was fun to put together--we learned a few lessons for next year--and the kids had so much fun unwinding it.
We got some good snow and the dads took the kids sledding while we put the yarn ball together. The kids were so happy to go since it never snowed enough or stayed cold long enough last year to go. We also took full advantage of having a babysitter (Natalie) and spent one afternoon watching Les Miserables and another wandering through IKEA (my first time). It's a nice change after years and years of little kids to have our kids growing up and becoming independent.
